NEWCASTLE and Aston Villa would both have a Premier League title nestled in their trophy cabinets today if every season had ended after 29 games.
The 2019-20 season is edging ever closer to being abandoned after being provisionally suspended until April 4 over coronavirus fears.
That means Liverpool COULD be denied of their first-ever Premier League crown, despite being 25 points clear with just nine games to play.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are a maximum of two wins away from clinching the title, but they could be cruelly denied, depending on how football bosses decide to act.
With that in mind, Sporting Index have taken a look at how every Premier League campaign would have looked had it been cut short.
And it’s bad news for Newcastle and Aston Villa who both dropped points late in the season to miss out on what would have been their only PL title.
Newcastle, of course, famously missed out on the 1995-96 season to Manchester United, with their thrilling 4-3 loss against Liverpool – and boss Kevin Keegan slumping over the advertising hoardings – living long in the memory of all football fans, particularly Toon followers.
HEROES TO VILLANS
Elsewhere, Villa fell away late in the 1992-93 season – the first ever Premier League campaign – to hand United the crown in a 42-game season.
Meanwhile, Manchester City would have two FEWER trophies in their cabinet as they made a late charge twice to seal their first two PL trophies.
City famously sealed their first Premier League crown in 2010-11 when Sergio Aguero scored a dramatic 93rd minute winner against QPR on the last day of the season.
But after 29 games, they were trailing to cross-town rivals United.
Their second title win in 2013-14 would also not have stood, with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea top of the pile with nine games to play.
Leicester’s unlikely title run in 2015-16 would never have happened either.
That year, they were miles clear after 29 games… but they never would have been given the chance to go on that run.
That’s because the Foxes would have been relegated in a 29 game season a year prior, but for their late, Jamie Vardy-inspired escape job.
