‘I don’t know how long we can stay on this path’ – Brighton boss Potter concerned as Omicron sweeps through Prem

BRIGHTON manager Graham Potter admits he does not know “how long we can stay on this path for” with the Omicron crisis sweeping through Premier League clubs.

The Seagulls boss revealed a request to the Prem to postpone their 1-0 defeat to Wolves was denied with up to four players suffering positive Covid-19 tests.

Brighton manager Graham Potter is worried about the impact Omicron is having on Premier League football

And next up they travel to Old Trafford to face another Covid-hit side in Manchester United.

Asked whether there needs to be a break from football to get the variant outbreak under control, Potter said: “I haven’t given it much thought. On the ground it is difficult.

“We all want football and life to continue as best we can but clearly health is the most important thing.

“This week has been a bit disturbing in terms of how quickly we have been affected so if that carries on we need some serious thought.

“In the vacuum when you don’t know and its case by case, there will be frustrations. It would be better if it was more transparent. I don’t know how long we can stay on this path for.”

Manchester United, whose match at Brentford was called off late on Monday night, remain in talks with the Prem over hosting Brighton at the weekend.

It is believed the Red Devils had 19 positive cases across players and staff, which forced the closure of their Carrington HQ on Tuesday.

Under League rules, matches should be played unless clubs have fewer than 14 first-team players. But exceptions are made, including having no fit keepers.

A final decision is taken by the Premier League board, with each call on a ‘case-by-case’ basis.

On Wednesday night, Burnley’s Premier League home match against Watford was called off less than THREE hours before kick-off — following an outbreak in the Hornets’ squad.

That was the third Prem game in less than seven days to be postponed following Brighton vs Tottenham and Brentford vs Manchester United.
