Iconic Arsenal Stadium Turned into Private Hospital and Flats

A Blast from the Past

Arsenal fans may remember the beating they received from Oxford United at the Manor Ground in 1986, a game that saw the Gunners lose 3-0. Fast-forward to today, and the iconic stadium is no more, having been transformed into a private hospital and residential flats following a £12 million sale.

A Legendary Team Effort

Oxford United recruited Tottenham legend Steve Perryman during the 1985-86 season to help with their survival bid. Perryman's experience proved invaluable as the team not only secured their spot in Division One with a 3-0 victory over Arsenal, but also went on to win the League Cup just 15 days earlier.

The Decline of the Manor Ground

The Manor Ground, which had been Oxford United's home since 1925, faced a series of challenges in the 1990s. The team suffered three relegations, and the stadium itself began to deteriorate. Safety concerns and the imminent move to the Kassam Stadium led to the decision to sell the Manor Ground.

A New Purpose

Oxford owner Firoz Kassam bought the Manor Ground and developed it into a state-of-the-art hospital and residential complex. The hospital now boasts 64 private bedrooms, six modern surgical theatres, a pharmacy, and two procedural units. The Manor Ground's iconic stands have been replaced by 87 residential flats.

A Change in Atmosphere

While the move to the Kassam Stadium may have been necessary, many Oxford fans feel nostalgic for the Manor Ground. The smaller stadium created a unique atmosphere, with fans feeling close to the action on the pitch. The Kassam Stadium's larger capacity and open end have led to a loss of atmosphere during matches.
