‘I’d be happy to lose if it helped Ukraine’ – Tuchel braced for anti-Chelsea feeling ahead of Wembley final vs Liverpool

THOMAS TUCHEL would be ‘happy’ to LOSE Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final if it ended Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Chelsea’s boss admits it will be hard to enjoy the Wembley showpiece — even if his team beat Liverpool.

Boss Tuchel admits it will be hard to enjoy the Wembley showpiece

Blues owner Roman Abramovich sensationally gave up control of the club in a shock statement on Saturday night.

But Tuchel is prepared for a wave of anti-Chelsea feeling after Labour MP Chris Bryant called for the billionaire Russian to be banned from owning the club.

More than 190 civilians have died since Vladimir Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine three days ago.

And ahead of this afternoon’s big match, Tuchel declared: “As it’s so fresh, maybe the game comes with a bad conscience.

“Are we allowed to fully engage and fully celebrate? Is this appropriate?

“This is how I feel. What would it help now if we lose a football match?

“It will not help. If it would help, I am happy to lose the match.

“Suddenly we have a war in Europe. This is a horrible situation.”

However, he refuses to use any anti-Blues backlash to motivate players.

He added: “You can build this mentality, to protect your team.

“But, in this case, the issue is too big to be used by us to turn it around.

“We are emotionally involved — we suffer with everybody.”

Liverpool are planning to allow stars to stage a show of support for Ukraine before the match.

Discussions with the players, the EFL and the club have taken place for a peaceful protest to be staged, with skipper Jordan Henderson voicing deep concerns.

England star Hendo, 31, declared: “It’s a scary situation for everyone. It’s frightening to think about what might happen.”
