I’m a former Chelsea and England star – I tried to sell Jose Mourinho my rare Ferrari in exchange for a new contract

FORMER Chelsea star Joe Cole has revealed he tried to sell Jose Mourinho his Ferrari in exchange for a new contract.

But the Portuguese head coach declined the cheeky offer from the winger.

Joe Cole won two Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea

Cole, 41, spent seven years at Stamford Bridge between 2003 and 2010.

And he enjoyed three seasons under Mourinho in which he claimed two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup.

And during his time working with “The Special One”, Cole attempted to secure a new deal when Mourinho showed interest in his new Ferrari.

Speaking in a column for The Telegraph, Cole said: “Only once in my career did I buy a flash car.

“It was a Ferrari Scaglietti, around the year 2006. I convinced myself I should have one but it did not feel right.

“The dealer said I was lucky to get it. My usual sceptical view of the world meant I did not believe him, but it turned out the model was quite rare.

“When he saw it in the car park at Cobham, Jose Mourinho offered to buy it off me.

“I said I was happy to do so on the condition that he told the club to give me a new contract.

“Sadly, we never did that deal.”

Mourinho ended up leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2006/07 season, but Cole remained at the Bridge for three more years.

He would go on to win the double under Carlo Ancelotti, before leaving for Liverpool in 2010.

A loan spell at Lille followed, along with a return to boyhood club West Ham and stints with Aston Villa, Coventry City and American side Tampa Bay Rowdies.

He hung up his boots in 2018 and is now a pundit for BT Sport.
