Inside Arteta’s morale-boosting Arsenal pre-season as Emile Smith Rowe lifts lid on ten-pin bowling trash talk with boss

EMILE SMITH ROWE has already experienced the full rollercoaster of emotions involved in playing for Arsenal.

Now the young England star is looking forward to the real thing as he heads to Florida’s famous Universal theme park tomorrow.

Emile Smith Rowe revealed his trash talk with Mikel Arteta during a game of bowling

In the past few weeks he has beaten “competitive” boss Mikel Arteta at ten-pin bowling and loved every minute of the club’s dining room “wheel of fortune”.

And the player known as the “Croydon De Bruyne” has also been studying footage of the real thing as he looks to take his game to the next level.

For Smith Rowe, 21, is making the most of every minute of pre-season to help him secure a place in England’s World Cup squad later this year.

ESR revealed: “I need to keep improving my stats because I didn’t really get many assists last season.

“I’ve been watching clips of my game, noting the timing of my passes and where I should have played it to create more chances.

“And I’ve been watching footage of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount to see what those creative players are doing.

“The World Cup is definitely a target but first of all I want to get as fit as I can to get as many minutes as possible to show what I can do.”

Yet it has not been all work and no play for Smith Rowe during the Gunners’ summer training camps in Nuremberg, Baltimore and now Orlando.

He added: “We’re going to Universal on Thursday and I can’t wait. I’ve been to Chessington, Thorpe Park and Alton Towers and I love all that stuff.

“We all went bowling when we were in Germany and I won.

“Me and the gaffer were going head-to-head and because we were on the lanes next to each other it got quite competitive. I was quite surprised how competitive he was. There was a fair bit of trash talk going on but it was funny.

“The manager has told us that we need to become a family as soon as the new players come in and that’s what we’re all trying to do.

“We’ve been putting everyone’s name on a roulette wheel to decide where we all sit for dinner. If I had to choose who to sit next to, I’d go for Marquinhos. He’s a very funny guy.

“His English isn’t great but I’m teaching him some new words… but not the rude ones.”

Smith Rowe is still struggling to shake off a persistent thigh injury and is unlikely to feature in this week’s friendlies against Orlando City and Chelsea.

He said: “I’m proud of last season because I signed my new contract and made my debut for England — but I’ve also been unfortunate with injuries.

“I’m strong mentally, so they don’t get to  me.   It’s   just annoying.”
