Jonjo Shelvey bizarrely APOLOGISES to Newcastle fans despite helping team secure vital 2-1 win over Brighton

NEWCASTLE midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has bizarrely apologised for his performance in their 2-1 victory over Brighton.

Eddie Howe’s side extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight games with a hard-fought win at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Shelvey has apologised for his display against Brighton on Saturday afternoon

The result took them seven points clear of the relegation zone as they look set to secure their top flight status for another year.

Yet despite clinching the three points, Shelvey was so unhappy with his own individual display that he felt the need to front up to the Newcastle supporters.

The 30-year-old former Liverpool man played the full 90 minutes and did not appear to make any glaring errors which cost his side.

But speaking on social media, he said: “We weren’t at our best yesterday but sometimes you have to grind out results – credit to Brighton.

“I apologise for my own performance: I’ve actually watched the game back twice but I dug deep and am proud of my team for doing the same.

“I honestly thought the fans were absolutely fantastic and it excites me what this place is going to be like in three or four years time and to keep seeing the results you’ve had in the past eight games but on a bigger scale.

“The sky’s the limit.”

Two goals in three minutes from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schar gave Newcastle a two-goal lead after just a quarter of an hour.

But Lewis Dunk brought the visitors back into the game 10 minutes into the second half.

Brighton pressed for an equaliser but the hosts defended valiantly and managed to hold on for a fifth win in six Prem matches.

Staring down the barrel of relegation at Christmas time, Newcastle are now just five points off the top half of the table.

Next up for the Magpies is a trip to St Mary’s to take on Southampton on Thursday.
