Jose Mourinho told referee Andre Marriner ‘I care for you’ but criticised performance after Chelsea’s win over Tottenham

TOTTENHAM manager Jose Mourinho has revealed what he told referee Andre Marriner after his side’s defeat to Chelsea.

Spurs suffered their third Premier League defeat in a row on Thursday evening as a first half penalty gave Thomas Tuchel’s side a deserved 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Eric Dier sloppily gave away the crucial penalty against Chelsea on Thursday evening

And while there did not appear to be any contentious decisions during the 90 minutes, Mourinho still went over to talk to Marriner at the end of the game and was happy to divulge what he told him.

He said: “I told him something that he knows already which is that I consider him one of the best referees in the Premier League and I care for him.

“He’s a referee that I have a big admiration [for] and that gives me probably a good position to tell him that I didn’t like his performance so it was basically like that.

“I have a very good relationship with Andre so that gives me a good position to tell him that I didn’t like the performance.”

The key moment of the match came when Eric Dier lazily tripped Timo Werner in the box mid-way through the first half to gift Chelsea a penalty.

Jorginho stepped up and dispatched the spot kick to net what proved to be the winning goal.

Questions are now being asked off Mourinho at Spurs as he continues to struggle

Spurs have been criticised once more for their lack of attacking intent in games after they registered 11 fewer shots than the visitors.

The Lilywhites have now scored just once in their last three Premier League games and appear to be desperately missing the creativity of talisman Harry Kane.

Mourinho’s side are eighth in the table after 21 games, seven points off the top four.

Next up for Spurs is a home match against West Brom on Sunday.
