Jurgen Klopp admits he’s not shocked Liverpool’s treble dream ended after FA Cup loss at Chelsea

JURGEN KLOPP watched Liverpool’s treble dreams go up in smoke and insisted: “It’s not the biggest shock.”

The runaway league leaders suffered their third defeat in four games as they were dumped out of the FA Cup at Chelsea.

And Klopp admitted his team are struggling to maintain their focus ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League return against Atletico Madrid.

He said: “Usually you don’t get a lot of chances to score against us because we have defended outstandingly this season.

“But now we have to admit that in the last four games we have conceded absolutely too many goals.

“I can’t argue with the numbers and they’re not cool. We don’t want to concede and we want to score more goals.

“We have done very well this season but tonight we were not good enough and we have to accept that we are out of the competition.

“Losing 2-0 is not good but this result is easy to explain because we made two massive mistakes for their goals.

“It was a super intense game and both teams were running around like mad. We had our moments, especially when their keeper made three or four saves in a row.

“You can’t expect it to be easy away to Chelsea but we are not 100 miles away from putting it right and these boys are strong.

“At Watford on Saturday our performance was really bad. Tonight it was not bad and I’m not concerned about it.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was delighted with his team after goals from Willian and Ross Barkley confirmed their place in this evening’s quarter-final draw.

He said: “I’m really proud. Liverpool are the best team in the league and what they are doing is incredible.

“So for us to put in a performance like that was something special and we have to celebrate these moments.

“I couldn’t ask for more. The spirit, the work ethic and the quality were outstanding. We defended with everything, played well and deserved to win the game.

“In our first two games against Liverpool this season we have played better football at times.

“But today there was an extra spirit about us and we should take the positives from that because we have shown we can compete against the big teams.

“We are in a transition period and we’re not the Chelsea period of different eras with the likes of Hazard, Costa, Terry and Drogba.

“We’re in a different place with younger players and some older players trying to bridge the gap to teams like Liverpool.

“So it’s important to know that unless we work hard every day in training, behave well and go home thinking how we can be better as a group, we can’t make that jump up.”

Lampard was particularly pleased with 18-year-old Billy Gilmour and said: “I’ve got absolute trust in Billy.

“I remember when we drew against Sheffield United and people asked me after the game ‘who is this 15-year-old?’

“But I’ve no problem with him if he’s small in stature because he is huge in personality and talent.

“When I look at a midfield player I ask does he want to receive the ball in all positions, does he pick the right pass and will he put his foot in?

“Billy did all of those things tonight. What a performance.”
