Jurgen Klopp aims cheeky jibe at Man Utd as Liverpool are crowned team of the year at SPOTY in Manchester

JURGEN KLOPP aimed a cheeky jibe at Manchester United after Liverpool were crowned Team of the Year at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The Reds lifted their first-ever Premier League title last season, claiming a record 99 points after losing just three games while finishing 18 points clear of second-place Manchester City.

Klopp was also named Coach of the Year after winning last season’s title

Sunday’s SPOTY was held in a TV studio in Manchester due to coronavirus restrictions.

And Klopp had a joke at fierce rival United’s expense as he accepted Liverpool’s award for Team of the Year.

The German quipped: “Getting this prize in Manchester by the way makes it even sweeter!”

He said before: “First and foremost I have to say, each team I saw now in the short summary would have absolutely deserved it.

“But I think my team deserves it, they did an incredible job. It’s a mix of talent, character, desire and the power of the club which is really a big one.

“That all comes together and we become champions. It was a great moment to be honest.

“[Celebrating with fans?] We can wait for them! We do what we can do to bridge the time until they are back again.

“We said it before – we want to organise a big, big party in the moment that it is allowed again.

“It looks like it will take a little while still. We will see – maybe we can win something before then and we have two things to celebrate.

“But if not, the one thing we won last year we will celebrate for sure. We can’t wait to see you again.”

There was another win for Klopp on the night as he was also crowned Coach of the Year.

He added: “My coaching team is obviously the main reason why all the things work the way they work.

“It’s really nice. On behalf of my coaches I accept it and take it home to Liverpool. Thank you very much.”
