Keane and Neville urge Man Utd to invest in transfers for at least striker and defender after clinching Champions League

MANCHESTER UNITED legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane have urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to spend big this summer.

The Red Devils pocketed an extra £80million by securing Champions League football next season.

Neville and Keane want Solskjaer to spend big this summer

A nervy 2-0 victory over Leicester ensured the Red Devils finished in third, making a return to Europe’s biggest competition.

It has given Solskjaer further scope to delve into the transfer window with greater chances of landing big name signings.

United have been heavily linked with a £108m move for Jadon Sancho while £70m-rated Jack Grealish and Barcelona wonderkid Ansu Fati are also on the shortlist.

And Neville believes his former side cannot afford to waste their budget like they did under Jose Mourinho.

He told Sky Sports: “I think it’s a big day for Ole, it gives him some peace and demonstrates progress.

“They can play a different way now, they were very basic in his first six months.

“With [Mason] Greenwood emerging and [Bruno] Fernandes, they look like they can win games in different ways.

“They need more players in their squad. The last time they finished in the top four was under Jose Mourinho and they spent £170million in that summer and didn’t invest it wisely.

“They need to invest it again but do it properly this time to get nearer to Liverpool and Manchester City.

“They need to improve the first XI. That’s not a detriment to the first XI from today.

“It’s about making sure they get in players who want to play for the club. United have never really done that.

“Ole seems to have brought that back in the past 12 months and it’s working, it’s better.”

His thoughts are echoed by Keane who believes Solskjaer needs to press forward with plans to sign a central defender.

He added: “I think they need another centre-half. You want options all over the park. They probably need another striker.

“It’s about getting quality players but the right characters. You talk about Fernandes, he comes across as a pro, a really nice person.”

Jadon Sancho remains United’s No1 transfer target

Nathan Ake is wanted by a trio of Premier League clubs

United are looking at Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly to partner Harry Maguire in defence but face serious competition from the likes of Liverpool and Man City.

Nathan Ake is also up for sale this summer following Bournemouth’s relegation to the Championship.

City and Chelsea are also keen and it is believed a bid of around £40m will be enough to lure him away from the Vitality Stadium.
