Liverpool would have booked their spot in the knockout stages with a win tonight.
The Reds were the firm favourites after they thumped Atalanta 5-0 earlier this month.
But the Serie A side came out on top after they stepped it up a gear in the second half.
Josip Ilicic scored the opener before Robin Gosens doubled their tally to pile the pressure on Liverpool.
The Reds now sit just two points clear of Ajax at the top of Group D.
