The right-back had been caught by the studs of Gabriel Martinelli in the first-half.

He is now expected to be out for two weeks, according The Athletic.

They also report that it will be between two to three weeks before Matip returns, meaning both defenders are likely to miss Liverpool’s clash against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was subbed off in the second-half of the 3-2 loss and replaced by Ibrahima Konate, who has just come back from a long injury lay-off himself.

Jurgen Klopp faced more frustration after it emerged Diaz also picked up a knock.

In better news for the Merseyside club, first-choice left-back Andy Robertson is back in training and could even be fit for tomorrow’s tricky trip to Ibrox to face Rangers.

Despite the injuries, Reds fans have been concerned by the club’s inconsistency this season.

Highs have included a 9-0 win over Bournemouth but Liverpool have also been stunned in defeats away at Napoli and at rivals Manchester United.
