Liverpool ‘pull out of Timo Werner transfer talks’ with Klopp refusing to meet RB Leipzig’s £50m release clause

LIVERPOOL are ready to pull out of the race to sign RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner as they refuse to match his £50million release clause, according to reports.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has been lining up a switch for the Germany international to provide Roberto Firmino competition in attack.

Liverpool may miss out on signing Timo Werner this summer

But the Mirror write how they are unwilling to trigger his release fee, which expires on June 15, because the Reds feel it doesn’t represent value for money.

Instead, Liverpool are only prepared to fork out £30m to bring him to Anfield – an offer unsurprisingly refused by the Bundesliga club.

Werner has scored an impressive 24 league goals in 28 appearances this season.

And Leipzig’s chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff warned Liverpool that Werner’s price tag will not drop if they fail to meet the release clause deadline.

Speaking to Sport Bild, he said: “It won’t get any cheaper. We will not sell a player below value if he is under contract for more than a year.

“In general, we always have to ask the following question – can we replace a player if we sell him for less than his market value?

“But, I only think about those things once I have the facts on the table.”

Werner is contracted to RB Leipzig until 2023 but he has made it no secret of his desire to move to Anfield and play under Klopp.

He labelled the Kop club as the “best team in the world” and added he would be a “good fit” at Anfield.

But it won’t stop Manchester United from making a late swoop for his signature with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the market for a new forward.

Loanee Odion Ighalo looks likely to head back to Shanghai Shenhua with the Chinese Super League side unwilling to permit an extension to his loan deal.

While Ighalo certainly filled a hole during his brief stint at Old Trafford, scoring four goals in eight appearances, he was never deemed a long-term solution up front.

That is why Solskjaer is looking at buying a younger, explosive striker in the summer.
