Liverpool’s best and worst Champions League group stage draws including daunting clash against Bayern Munich

LIVERPOOL will find out their Champions League group stage opponents when the draw is made on Thursday.

The six-time European champions are looking to reclaim the trophy they won in 2019 when they beat Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

Liverpool will be hoping to become European champions for an incredible seventh time

But despite their enormous pedigree in the competition, Liverpool have been placed in pot 2 for the draw.

That means they could face a number of European heavyweights in the group stage, making their route to the knockout rounds all the more challenging.

The pots for the draw are as follows:

Pot 1: Chelsea, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Lille, Sporting Lisbon.

Pot 2: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund.

Pot 3: Porto, Ajax, Shakhtar Donetsk, RB Leipzig, FC Salzburg, Benfica, Atalanta, Zenit St Petersburg.

Pot 4: Besiktas, Dynamo Kiev, Club Brugge, Young Boys, AC Milan, Malmo, VfL Wolfsburg, Sheriff Tiraspol.

Under UEFA rules, no teams from the same nation are allowed to be drawn against one another in the group stage.

This means Liverpool cannot draw Chelsea or Manchester City, but they could still face a major European powerhouse.

That massive test could come in the form of Bayern Munich who won the Champions League 12 months after Liverpool’s last triumph.

The nightmare draw for Liverpool from pots 3 and 4 would be last year’s quarter-finalists Porto and seven-time winners AC Milan.

A group of Bayern, Porto and AC Milan would present Klopp’s men with a terribly daunting task so early on in the competition.

But Jurgen Klopp‘s men will not fear the German champions as they knocked them out of the competition during their 2019 run to glory.

Facing one another in the last 16, the Reds played out a goalless draw at Anfield before beating Bayern 3-1 away from home to reach the quarter-finals.

However, Liverpool would ideally like to avoid the German giants, especially if they can draw the likes of Sporting Lisbon instead.

The Merseyside club would undoubtedly prefer to see the likes of Sporting Lisbon, FC Salzburg and Malmo drawn in their group on Thursday.
