Local Referee Becomes Heroic Linesman in Pompey Game

Pompey Fan Swaps Corporate Hospitality for Linesman Duties

Pompey fan, Julian Browning, made headlines over the weekend when he answered an SOS call to become an emergency linesman in a game against Cheltenham. Browning stepped onto the pitch after fourth official Stephen Brown and another linesman were forced to leave due to injuries.

Borrowed Kit and Flashy Gold Boots

In order to fulfill his new role, Browning had to borrow kit, including a pair of eye-catching gold boots. Cheltenham boss, Wade Elliott, praised Browning's performance, labeling him as "the best official we've had all year" and joking that all referees should have a curry and four pints before officiating a match.

An Abandoned Game Averted

The game was in danger of being abandoned when referee Ben Toner took the players off the pitch to search for a replacement linesman. Browning's name was finally called out over the stadium's PA system, and he eagerly stepped in to save the day.

A True Pompey Fan

Browning, a lifelong Pompey fan, revealed that he hadn't set foot on the Fratton Park turf since he played in a school cup final in 1978. He expressed his excitement at being able to contribute to his beloved team's game and even joked about his eye-catching gold boots.

Despite his initial nerves, Browning managed to handle the pressure well and successfully fulfilled his linesman duties. The game ended goalless after 21 minutes of added time due to the lino chaos.

Praise from Managers and Players

Cheltenham boss, Wade Elliott, commended his team for remaining focused during the unexpected situation. Portsmouth manager, John Mousinho, also praised the visitors for allowing the game to continue despite Browning's affiliation as a Pompey fan.

Browning received a warm round of applause from the crowd when he raised his flag for a throw-in shortly after the game resumed. Pompey midfielder, Joe Morrell, expressed his gratitude and relief that the game went ahead and ended in a goalless draw.
