HARRY MAGUIRE has revealed the crucial change behind Manchester United’s turnaround this season and insists they will be challenging for titles soon.

Before the coronavirus crisis KO’d this season indefinitely, the Red Devils were on an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions and up to fifth spot in the Premier League, pushing for a Champions League place.

The United skipper told Gary Neville that he has already set his sights on winning the Premier League title

The 27-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Leicester for a world record £80m last summer, and had only been at the club for five months, before he was was trusted with the senior leadership position by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He certainly hasn’t let the Red Devils boss down, enjoying an impressive first season at Old Trafford.

The United skipper has already set his sights on winning the Premier League title and has insisted the club shouldn’t just settle for finishing in the top-four.

United have not been crowned champions since 2012/13 and in the six completed seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, they have only finished in the Champions League places on two occasions.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Gary Neville and Geoff Shreeves for The Football Show, Maguire said: “I think you can see from the start of the season we look a lot more like a team, we can probably see where we want to go, where we want to head.

“I knew when I first came to Manchester United that Ole said to me loads and loads it’s a building process but we’ll be where we want to be.

“I can see where we’re heading and the style he wants to implement on the team.

“Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of aspects we need to improve to get to the top of where we want to be. We don’t want to be challenging for this Champions League spot, we want to be challenging for titles.

“We know there’s still a lot of improvement to get there, but we’re on the right track and I’m sure eventually we will get there.”

United have kept nine clean sheets in their last 11 games and the former Leicester man credits increased competition for places, and their improvement at defending set-pieces for the rejuvenated form at the back.

He said: “One thing we’ve shored up on is defending set plays. If you look at our record before the run of clean sheets, defending set plays we were up there with one of the worst in the league.

“If you can’t defend set plays and you’re not scoring at the other end through them you’re not going to stand a chance of reaching where you want to go, it’s such a big part of the game now.

“We’ve gelled together, it’s a new back four, Luke [Shaw] has been playing really, really well of late.

“We’ve got Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], me and Vic [Victor Lindelof]. Eric [Bailly] is coming back and is pushing for a place, which makes everyone up their games, because when he’s come in he’s done really well.”

Solskjaer has certainly put a smile back on fans’ faces following the gloom-laden closing months of Jose Mourinho’s reign.

He won his first eight games and lost only one of his first 17 when he took over in the December of last season.

The tables turned and pressure mounted on the Norwegian boss when his players limped to just two wins from their final 12 games of the 2018/19 campaign.

But the Red Devils have looked like a completely different team since the January transfer window this year, having signed Bruno Fernandes and secured Odion Ighalo on a loan deal.

Maguire has hailed Fernandes who signed for £68m from Sporting Lisbon, for injecting a new creativity at Old Trafford.

The former Leicester man, said: “He has been brilliant since he’s come in, off the field, around the training field. He is a leader, he wants to win, everything he does.

“He has been brought up with that attitude. He has given us that little bit more life, that little bit more creativity in the middle that we have missed over the years.

“It is a start. There are lots of aspects he wants to improve and I’m sure he will improve and get better for this club.

“We have Paul [Pogba] to come back and make him lift his game even more.”

United are three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, before the season was shut down to the coronavirus outbreak.
