Man Utd boss Solskjaer admits transfer signings of Ronaldo, Varane and Sancho mean it’s time he delivered silverware

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER admits his £400MILLION transfer splurge has left him under pressure to deliver trophies.

The Manchester United boss has spent a huge sum since taking charge in December 2018 including £135million this summer on Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of several stars United have splashed the cash on under Solskjaer

His former team-mates Gary Neville said on Sky that meant he simply had to deliver and Solskjaer agreed.

The Norwegian said: “If he says we need to win a trophy this season or next, because of the backing, I have to say, yes, I have been backed.

“The progress and the process has worked well. I have to say the backing I’ve got seems to me that we’re sticking to that plan.

“But we’re in a results business. We’re here to win, we’re here to get up there and clearly we’ve improved and expectations have improved, with the signings and better performances.

“I’m here to win. Don’t think twice about that, and Gary knows that.

“The pressure is a privilege. To work in this environment, you have to embrace that pressure.”

Solskjaer is under pressure going into Wednesday’s second Champions League Group F game at home to Villarreal having lost the opener to Young Boys.

And this game comes on the back of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Harry Maguire is out with a calf injury for three weeks. That means the United captain will miss both their key games this week against Villarreal and Everton.

He will also miss out on England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary next month.

It is a big blow for club and country to be losing their key central defender after he limped out of the defeat to Villa.

There could be a double blow too with Luke Shaw also a doubt for tonight after suffering a knock that saw him come off in the first half of the Villa game.

Solskjaer said: “Luke has been in today so I’ll give him a chance to be involved, he didn’t train with the team.

“Harry is more or less definitely out. It doesn’t look good, it might take a few weeks.”

United will also be without right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Wednesday after he was sent off against Young Boys.

It will mean a start for both Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot while Alex Telles will be ready if Shaw does not make it.
