MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly snubbed Diego Simeone so they could appoint Louis van Gaal instead back in 2014.

Sir Alex Ferguson retired from football in 2013 after a mammoth 27-year stint at Old Trafford.

Man Utd chiefs decided against trying to bring Simeone to the club

His compatriot Moyes took the helm, only for him to last less than a year as he was sacked after a run of poor results.

And Man Utd then opted to go with experienced Dutch coach Van Gaal.

But the history books could have been very different if Man Utd had decided to go another route.

According to The Times, Simeone was considered as a potential successor to Moyes eight years ago.

However, Red Devils bosses felt because Simeone was only two and a half years into his Atletico Madrid contract that he would be tough to prise away from the Spanish side.

So they ended up plucking with Van Gaal and many United fans will be wondering in retrospect how much more success they could have had with Simeone.

Van Gaal spent just two seasons as Man Utd boss before being sacked in 2016.

In that time he won the FA Cup – his final act as the club’s manager – but ultimately struggled to improve the team.

He did help them to fourth in the Premier League in his first season – meaning they returned to the Champions League.

But a fifth place finish in his second campaign coincided with being eliminated in the group stages of the Champions League.

They then went on to lose to Liverpool in the last 16 of the Europa League.

At the same time, Simeone was coming off the back of winning the LaLiga title with Atletico in 2014 and finishing as a runner-up in the Champions League.

He went on to achieve the same feat in Europe two years later, while also clinching the LaLiga title again last season.

Add to that the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup trophies in 2018 and it becomes apparent Man Utd may well have made a massive mistake.

Since 2014, the only major trophies Man Utd have won are the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League – which came under Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
