Man Utd defender Axel Tuanzebe wanted by Besiktas in season-long loan transfer but he wants to stay to fight for place

MANCHESTER UNITED’s Axel Tuanzebe is wanted by Besiktas on loan but the defender would prefer to compete for a spot at Old Trafford, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has been used sparingly by Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, only featuring in five Premier League games this season.

Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe is wanted on loan by Benfica but would prefer to compete for a spot at Old Trafford

Turkish journalist Ertan Suzgun suggests Besiktas have identified the United youngster as a player that can strengthen their defence next season.

Tuanzebe starred on loan at Aston Villa in the Championship last year but has found himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer has seemingly settled on the centre-back pairing of England ace Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

The more experienced duo are set to continue in the heart of the defence when Premier League action returns from June 17 after the outbreak of Covid-19.

Tuanzebe may be forced to look elsewhere for more game time and Besiktas are keen on bringing the former Three Lions youth star to Turkey on a season-long loan.

However, it is thought he would prefer to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place in the side.

He first joined Villa on loan in January 2018 but a succession of injuries limited him to just five appearances before he re-signed for the following season.

Alongside Tyrone Mings, Tuanzebe impressed in 31 appearances in all competitions last year as Villa got promoted via the play-offs.

Boss Solskjaer kept in touch with his defensive ace during lockdown and it is understood that the Norwegian sees him as part of the club’s future.

Tuanzebe – who holds a Hungry Hippos world record – received a standing ovation from the United faithful when captaining the side in the League Cup against Rochdale in September.

It appears he is determined to stay and stake a claim for a spot in the side in order to add to the 11 appearances he has made in all competitions this season.
