Man Utd ‘eye Rabbi Matondo’ as bargain back up transfer to Sancho with Wales international, 19, impressing at Schalke

MANCHESTER UNITED are keeping tabs on Schalke star Rabbi Matondo as a potential fall-back option to Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

The four-cap Wales international, 19, has impressed in the Bundesliga this season and has been tipped for a return to the Premier League.

Man Utd are eyeing Rabbi Matondo as a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho

Manchester Evening News claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sent scouts to watch over Matondo on a number of occasions this season.

The former Manchester City youth product joined Sancho in swapping the Etihad for Germany, doing so in 2019.

Matondo has scored once in 12 Bundesliga games this season.

But Man Utd chiefs believe the Liverpool-born winger is in the same “low-risk, high-reward” category of player – much like Daniel James.

Another Wales star, James was signed from Swansea last summer, initially to serve as back-up to the first-team.

But the £15million man quickly became a key player under Solskjaer in his youthful revolution.

Matondo is expected to cost a fraction of what Sancho would, with Borussia Dortmund set to demand at least £100m for the England international.

The signing of Matondo would also help Solskjaer maintain his ethos of focusing on the signings of homegrown players.

So far, the Norwegian has already brought in Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as well as James.

And another top target this summer is English youngster Jude Bellingham, 16, currently at Birmingham.

Solskjaer is also keeping tabs on Swansea youngster Joe Rodon, 22, to bolster his defensive ranks this summer.

United are expected to bid £20m for the centre-back after a recommendation from club legend-turned-Wales boss Ryan Giggs – but face competition from City.
