Man Utd flop Van de Beek ‘one of most disappointing transfers EVER’, claims Berbatov amid £35m midfielder’s struggles

, Man Utd flop Van de Beek ‘one of most disappointing transfers EVER’, claims Berbatov amid £35m midfielder’s struggles

DONNY VAN DE BEEK’s move to Manchester United is up there with the worst transfers of all time, Dimitar Berbatov claims.

The 24-year old joined United for £35million last summer full of vigour but things haven’t gone to plan for the Dutchman.

Van De Beek’s been at United since last summer and has hardly played any matches
Berbatov thinks Van De Beek’s one of the most disappointing transfers in football history

Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Van De Beek only made 15 starts in all competitions last season, scoring once and assisting just two goals along the way.

Which is why ex-United striker Berbatov reckons the Netherlands international’s transfer is one of the worst of all time.

However, the Bulgarian doesn’t think it’s Van de Beek’s fault because he hasn’t played enough games to prove himself, which Berbatov finds strange.

Speaking to Betfair, he said: “It’s a really strange, disappointing and surprising situation.

“They [United] spent around £35million on him and, to pay that for a player who isn’t starting many games, doesn’t make sense.

“I’m not blaming the player at all, but for me, it’s one of the most disappointing transfers ever.”

And that’s also the reason why Berbatov thinks the former Ajax star’s days at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are numbered.

The 40-year-old added: “I don’t think we’re going to see any more playing time from Donny van de Beek.”

It’s not the first time that Berbatov’s been critical of the Dutchman.

Earlier this year, Bebartov insisted that Van de Beek should be demanding more playing time at Old Trafford to boost his confidence.

And if he wasn’t given more minutes at the club, then Berbatov wouldn’t be surprised if he chose to leave.

Berbatov said: “He should be banging on the manager’s door and asking ‘what is going on?’

“He should be asking why he’s not playing and what he can do to improve his situation. Then depending on what answers he gets, he can evaluate and do what is necessary.

“He’s only 23, so he’s got lots of football in him and he won’t want to waste any time. It’s an unpleasant situation for the player and hopefully it gets resolved soon.

“He needs a run of games in a row to give him confidence. I can see that his confidence isn’t high at the moment, and that’s normal because when you don’t play you start punishing yourself and ask questions of yourself.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he is starting to look for the exit and nobody will blame him. Something isn’t working.”

Now with Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club from Juventus, and Jadon Sancho’s £73m arrival from Borussia Dortmund, Van de Beek’s chances of starting look slimmer than ever.
