They found it through Diogo Dalot but with the match petering out there was almost one final twist.

Weghorst, 30, battled with Niakhate as he attempted to reach a through ball.

The Forest defender appeared to pull him back, leading a frustrated Weghorst to lash out.

The forward seemed to strike Niakhate with his right hand, causing the Frenchman to fall to the floor clutching his face.

Referee Simon Hooper waved play on and VAR decided not to intervene, but Gary Neville thought Weghorst was “asking for trouble”.

Some fans felt Weghorst’s actions deserved a red card, claiming he punched Niakhate.

One supporter said: “That should be a red card, Weghorst tried to punch Niakhaté.”

Another added: “Should be shown red to Weghorst. He’s mad.”

A third wrote: “Weghorst getting away with a punch off the ball

And another commented: “Weghorst lucky to not get red card.”
