Man Utd player ratings: Paul Pogba returns with a bang but Marcus Rashford could not hit a barn door against Boro

, Man Utd player ratings: Paul Pogba returns with a bang but Marcus Rashford could not hit a barn door against Boro

MANCHESTER UNITED’S miserable week off the pitch ended in disaster on it as Middlesbrough dumped them out of the FA Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty before Jadon Sancho gave them the lead.

Middlesbrough dumped Man Utd out of the FA Cup on penalties
Anthony Elanga blazed over in the shoot-out to tip off a miserable night for United

But a controversial equaliser from Matt Crooks sent the game to a penalty shoot-out – and the Stretford End was silenced as Anthony Elango blazed over.

Sancho soon settled the nerves with the opener.

Sun Sport’s Gary Stonehouse was at Old Trafford to give his verdict on how each of United’s men fared in the upset against the Championship side:

DEAN HENDERSON – 6/10

Had nothing to do in the first half but did brilliantly to tip Matt Crooks’ drive over after the restart.

Could not do much about the controversial equaliser except appeal for handball.

He then kept out Aaron Connolly in his last real call of duty before the shoot-out in extra time.

Failed to save a single penalty in the 8-7 shoot-out defeat.

DIOGO DALOT – 6

Same as Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, got forward whenever he could to whip in crosses and join the attack.

Was found nowhere to be seen for the equaliser though, but tried his hardest in the extra time to get United back on top as he hugged the touchline throughout.

Stepped up to score his penalty.

HARRY MAGUIRE – 6

Had little threat from Andraz Sporar or Folarin Balogun but looked a little shaky once up against the pace of Duncan Watmore.

The captain was unable to inspire a way back from United before spot-kicks, and summed things up perfectly when playing the ball straight out of play after joining an attack towards the end of extra time as groans swept around the Theatre of Dreams.

Did have enough guts to step forward and power home a penalty.

RAPHAEL VARANE- 7

Expertly read a Sporar pass to deny Balogun a clean route on goal and then outmuscled the on-loan Arsenal forward moments later to show he went business.

Was class above throughout and glided through the challenge of the youngster until Watmore replaced the Boro forward off the bench.

Within seconds the centre-half was caught in no man’s land as Isiah Jones found Watmore free to lob over Henderson towards Matt Crooks to slide in. Went off injured on 90 mins.

LUKE SHAW – 6

An attacking threat down the left and played in Pogba to win the penalty.

But was caught up field when Boro were having their second half resurgence – including in the move that led to the equaliser.

SCOTT McTOMINAY -5

Cruised through without making much of an impact as Pogba’s defensive duties outshone his.

Came close with a header in extra time and scored his penalty.

PAUL POGBA – 8

Showed his defensive qualities by stopping Isiah Jones’ surge forward early and then won the penalty after being tripped by Anfernee Dijksteel.

Won the ball back to start the move for Sancho’s opener and then looked to get himself on the scoresheet with a strike from distance.

Showed his nastiness by taking a booking for the team when Marcus Tavernier was breaking clear.

Nicked the ball off Tavernier again on the edge of the area just as the Boro man was about to pull the trigger and continued to provide an attacking threat in a great display until he was taken off late on.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 6

Could have done better when firing over after Sancho’s floater bounced back off the crossbar, but then spurned an even better chance when clean through after beating the offside trap.

Produced a beautiful pass over the top to set Sancho away for the first goal.

Denied by the post in the second period with the goal at his mercy following another Boro goalkeeper and defensive mix-up.

Always buzzing about in the thick of things but could have settled the game if he’d had his shooting boots on – something he has been missing for a while now – but held his nerve to notch his pen.

MARCUS RASHFORD – 5

His pace is always a danger but he was too fast on half hour when his 20-yard drive past Joe Lumley was ruled out for offside.

An awful miss after the ball was put on a plate for him by Sancho after the break and he could still be playing at midnight and not find the net.

One of those nights for the forward.

JADON SANCHO – 7

Almost broke the deadlock with just over 70 seconds on the clock after miscommunication in the Boro defence but his effort came back off the bar.

Made amends on 25 minutes as he raced away and twisted Jones before rifling home, with the help of a deflection, to break the deadlock.

Quietened off in the second period but still caused a danger – but unfortunately for him his night ended early with what looked to be an injury.

CRISTIANO RONALDO – 6

Caught Boro’s Dael Fry and the keeper out early to set-up Sancho and then came close with an overhead kick.

Blew his lines from the penalty spot by blasting wide and then dragged another effort wide before the break.

Fired straight at Joe Lumley on his next try and his frustration continued after the restart when he sent Rashford’s pull-back into the side-netting.

It was the side-netting again for the veteran in extra time but he managed to redeem himself with a thunderous penalty in the shoot-out.

SUBS:

ANTHONY ELANGA (ON 82 MINS) – 4

On for Rashford but completely miscued a header from eight yards after Fred’s cross to win it and then headed another straight at the keeper in additional time to win it.

Then blazed the crucial penalty over to hand Boro the win.

FRED (ON 82 MINS) – 6

Took over from Pogba and teed-up fellow sub Elanga twice with brilliant crosses but his team-mate was unable to convert either.

Showed good energy in extra time and blazed a shot wide and scored his spot-kick.

PHIL JONES (ON 91 MINS) – 5

Replaced Varane for the start of extra-time and except for plenty of sideways passes, contributed little.

JUAN MATA (100 MINS) – 4

Veteran Spaniard appeared off the bench to take over from goalscorer Sancho for just his fourth appearance of the campaign.

And he failed to do much to show Rangnick why he deserves more game time except for converting his spot-kick.
