Man Utd sounded out Thomas Muller over transfer while Bayern Munich star was out of favour under Kovac this season

MANCHESTER UNITED sounded out Thomas Muller over a potential move to Old Trafford, according to reports.

The German forward has been on United’s radar for years and they reportedly made inquiries to his representatives when he was out of favour at Bayern Munich earlier this season.

Man Utd sounded out Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller about a move when he was out of favour earlier this season

It came when former manager Robert Kovac was still in charge of the Bavarians.

Muller, 30, only signed a new deal with Bayern in April but his future in Munich was in doubt earlier in the campaign when Kovac was leaving him on the bench.

United tried to capitalise on his situation having missed out on his signature in 2014 under former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal, according to Bild.

Christian Falk – head of football at the German outlet – claimed the Red Devils moved in the winter and said: “A United representative had spoke to Müller – who was still unsatisfied with his situation in Munich.

“If Müller’s role hadn’t changed under coach Hans-Dieter Flick, a transfer to United would have been a topic again this summer.

“Things turned out differently again… Müller extended his contract at Bayern. The love story of Müller and United will never have a happy end.”

The German international has been with the Bundesliga giants since he was ten and has made 527 appearances since breaking into the first team in 2009.

And having broken back into the team after Kovac was replaced by Flick last November, Muller broke a new single season Bundesliga assist record notching his 20th of the campaign during Bayern’s recent 4-2 away win at Bayer Leverkusen.

But it could have all been different if he had moved to Old Trafford in 2014 when Van Gaal was keen to be reunited with the 100 cap German international.

Falk added: “It was very, very close to being implemented. Van Gaal absolutely wanted Müller in 2014, and Müller could also imagine a future in Manchester.

“There were also unofficial phone calls between the player and the coach. Van Gaal said to Müller: ‘I want you!’

“But the Bayern bosses never thought United would pay the necessary transfer fee. But then a fax from United arrived at the FC Bayern office.

“The finance boss Jan-Christian Dreesen later confirmed to me there was a total of over £90million as an offer. But Bavaria still declined.

“Thomas Müller is FC Bayern and FC Bayern is Thomas Müller. Such a unique relationship in football isn’t given up for money.”

Muller was recently filmed doing a hilarious road runner impression in a post-match interview.

And fans raged at the German for stealing Serge Gnabry’s goal in their 2-0 win away at Union Berlin.
