Man Utd star Scott McTominay reveals how Cristiano Ronaldo inspires him as he aims to emulate Old Trafford icon

SCOTT McTOMINAY has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo has inspired him as he aims to emulate the Manchester United icon.

The Scotland midfielder, 23, certainly enjoys a different playing style to the 35-year-old Juventus forward.

McTominay says he has been inspired to work hard by Ronaldo

But in terms of mentality, McTominay is determined to work as hard as Ronaldo – on both his game and fitness – and avoid becoming “too comfortable”.

McTominay told the UTD podcast: “You look at Ronaldo and guys like this and their mentality is the top of the top and you don’t get any better than that.

“For me, looking up to somebody like that, the physique he’s got, the way that he applies himself.

“I have just seen a picture of him two days ago reading and revising different things that he’s trying to learn in his life off the pitch.

“People are just far too comfortable too quickly in their life.”

McTominay has been a revelation for Man Utd in recent seasons after breaking into the first-team in 2017.

Since his debut against Arsenal at the end of the 2016-17 season, he’s gone on to play 51 times in the Premier League for the Old Trafford outfit, scoring six times.

His grit and determination in the middle of the park has been a breath of fresh air at a club devoid of leaders for so long following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

And McTominay’s attitude is clearly to not rest on his laurels and keep working to become the best player he can be.

The 12-cap Scotland international has maintained his incredible work ethic even during the coronavirus lockdown too.

McTominay shared his 5km run time on Instagram – proudly boasting a time of 16:01 for 5.03km.

That remarkable time would see him sit in the top 30 times in the UK this year, had it been completed on a standard 400m running track.

Man Utd team-mate Daniel James revealed many Red Devils stars have tried – and failed – to best his time.
