And after agreeing a £40m fee with Real Madrid for Varane the Red Devils are committed to spending £113m this summer.

According to The Telegraph United are targeting an overall net spend between £75m and £100m.

That means players will have to be sold, particularly if United are to land Kieran Trippier.

United are willing to spend £18m on the former Tottenham right-back, 30, but Atletico are playing hardball over the transfer as they are in no rush to sell.

And given United’s financial situation it is possible Ed Woodward will look to offload players before increasing his bid for the England man.

Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard are two players who have been heavily linked with an exit from Old Trafford.

West Ham still remain keen on Lingard after his successful loan spell with The Hammers last season but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to keep him in the squad.

Lingard has played a role in United’s pre-season friendlies so far so United may be unwilling to let him leave.

As for Pogba, United are at risk of losing the Frenchman for free next year as the midfielder still has not pen to paper on a new deal.

In fact, the 28-year-old rejected a the offer of a new contract last week amid speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

That transfer would help United to balance the books and could allow them to sign a midfielder, with the likes of Leon Goretzka, Saul Niguez and Eduardo Camavinga linked to the club.
