MANCHESTER UNITED will not be extending the loans of Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling.
The pair’s season-long deals with Inter Milan and Roma were extended until August 2 because of the enforced break.
But they will NOT be able to feature in more Europa League games.
Inter and Roma have yet to play their round-of-16 ties against Getafe and Sevilla respectively.
Should they progress, Roma are a possible semi-final opponent for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, while Inter could meet United in the final in Cologne on August 21.
Smalling has made 34 appearances for Roma and they are keen to sign the 30-year-old on a permanent deal.
Sanchez suffered a serious ankle injury while on international duty with Chile in October, but returned to first team action in January.
Inter boss Antonio Conte said of the winger earlier this month: “We knew very well that Sanchez had not been very good for two years at Manchester United, he was a little lost.
“He came here and got himself involved, he had bad luck as he injured his ankle but luckily there was Lautaro [Martinez] and [Romelu] Lukaku.
“He is now well, he is taking more and more control and I am starting to see the real Sanchez.
“He must continue like this, then we will see what the future holds. Today we must focus on the present and do our best.”
Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca has spoken of his desire to keep Smalling in Italy.

The Giallorossi coach said in May: “I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too. I know he wants to stay, let’s see what happens.
“He’s an amazing man, so humble, so professional. He is adored by the fans and established himself as one of the leaders in the dressing room.
“It’s not easy for English central defenders to adapt so quickly to Italian football, the record there isn’t good, but he has been amazing.”
