FURIOUS Jan Bednarek claimed Anthony Martial admitted there was ” not a foul” as VAR handed 9-0 winners Manchester United a penalty and Southampton their second red card.
Alexandre Jankewitz’s second-minute dismissal won few people’s sympathy but Bednarek’s late sending-off was compared to David Luiz’s controversial red card earlier on the same night for Arsenal.
Referee Mike Dean studied video replays before awarding a spot-kick for a trip on two-goal sub Anthony Martial from which Bruno Fernandes made it 7-0 in the 87th minute.
Bednarek remonstrated bitterly as he was sent off and led away down the tunnel.
Turning and raising his arms, the Saints defender exclaimed: “Martial said it’s not a foul!”
The Pole received strong support from two former Liverpool and England strikers turned pundits.
Michael Owen tweeted: “That absolutely sums things up. The best thing is it hardly matters. But if that’s a pen then the game has officially gone.
“Biggest example of a dive I’ve seen in ages. Shambles.”
And Peter Crouch posted: “Is he not trying to get out of the way?”
But with a nod to United‘s record-breaking win, and the fact the penalty sparked three goals in the dying minutes, Crouch joked of Southampton “They could have got back into it without that.”
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer focused on the home side’s exhilarating spree.
He said: “We have been waiting for them to show the magic but that was a night they could go and enjoy.
“We haven’t had too many of those, where I can just sit down in the second half and enjoy the football.”

Arsenal defender Luiz had earlier slammed his “unbelievable” red card as Wolves recovered to beat the nine-man Gunners 2-1 at Molineux.
Luiz too conceded a penaty – despite replays suggesting he barely touched Willian Jose – enabling Ruben Neves to equaliser,
Joao Moutinho then smashed Wolves’ brilliant 30-yard winner and Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno was sent off for handling outside his area.
