Marcos Alonso’s renaissance and Chelsea’s strength in depth is a great problem for Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel recently said he is very happy with his current Chelsea squad.

Without adding any more signings before Saul Niguez was confirmed you can totally understand why.

Marcos Alonso has enjoyed a resurgence under Tuchel’s management
Tuchel’s current squad boasts a wealth of talent including Blues stopper Edouard Mendy

Just look at his bench against Arsenal and again against Liverpool last weekend.

It had the world-class Thiago Silva sat there alongside the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Ben Chilwell.

That is one hell of a 5-a-side team even if you have to put Silva in goal!

This gives Tuchel what we like to call a ‘great problem’ going into the season.

The reason it is ‘great’ is obvious; this gives Chelsea incredible strength in depth.

The type of strength that wins titles, the type of quality squad that will see you through a whole season, giving the rotation needed to get through a very busy schedule.

Just as importantly there are game-changing players on the bench who can come on and fix a problem or help win a match.

These are title-winning players on the bench, and what a position for Chelsea to be in.

The ‘problem’ part of it is keeping everyone happy throughout the course of the season.

Of course, this is easy to do really when you are winning and you have so many games to play.

But if Chelsea started to hit a rough patch of form and got knocked out of a couple of competitions, the games dry up a little and the morale decreases in the squad, that is when these problems could creep in and start affecting the atmosphere in camp.

Tuchel has been excellent at managing that so far, and I have no doubts in his man-management skills.

However, I would expect some players to become unhappy as the season goes on and their game time stays low. But as I say, this is a great problem to have.

A number of players including defender Antonio Rudiger have improved in form under Tuchel

Thiago Silva is likely still on the bench because he had a busy summer with Brazil at the Copa America, but one might argue it is also down to the great form of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

If this continues might we see more of the world-class Silva on the bench this season?

There is every chance that might happen, but Silva will be playing plenty of games I have no concern about that.

He is also the type of professional who will be just that throughout the season regardless.

Ben Chilwell has also sat out the first three matches, and although this is something that might concern him if it proceeds that he stays as a second choice, you also expect him to remain professional throughout.

But this is no slight on Chilwell, he hasn’t played simply due to the form of Marcos Alonso, who has had some kind of renaissance at Chelsea these last few games and since Tuchel arrived really.

He thrives as a wing-back and he is really proving his worth to this team in that position.
