Martial joins Ronaldo, Rooney and Beckham in list of Man Utd players to score 50-plus Premier League goals for club

ANTHONY MARTIAL joined a very prestigious list of Manchester United legends when scoring his 50th Premier League goal for the club.

A fantastic solo effort against Southampton on Monday night brought the Frenchman his half-century of league strikes.

He became the tenth United player to hit the mark with his boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer achieving the same feat during his playing days.

Leading the club’s Premier League scoring chart is Wayne Rooney and no one comes close to his staggering 183 strikes in 393 games.

Class of ’92 icons Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes then follow, as the only other members to hit three figures in a United jersey.

Serial goalgetters Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole and Solskjaer all finished up in the mid-90s.

But it is the Dutchman who boasts the best goals-per-game ratio of the list with his 95 goals coming in only 150 appearances.

By comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo set out to become one of the greatest players of all time with 84 league goals in 196 outings at Old Trafford.

Eric Cantona and David Beckham follow, on 64 and 62 goals respectively, before Martial takes pride of place in tenth.

It means the 24-year-old has scored more than club favourites such as Dwight Yorke (48), Teddy Sheringham (31) and Robin van Persie (also 48) even though he played during a far-less successful era for the Red Devils.

Under boss Solskjaer, the £36million signing from Monaco has enjoyed his best season yet, largely thanks to being played through the middle with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes supplying the ammunition.

Not since his debut campaign in 2015/16 has Martial surpassed ten goals and he has even added five assists to his 16 strikes this time around, as well as the club’s first league hat-trick since van Persie led the line.

And it is fair to say that this upturn in form has come at a vital time for the forward.

Many expected these sort of performances from the moment he arrived in Manchester but Martial, like his team, has underperformed for long spells in the past five years.

As Solskjaer looks to build a potentially title-challenging attack for next season, the forward has made a strong case for being the Norwegian’s focal point.
