Mason Greenwood on Verge of Deadline Day Move to Manchester United’s Champions League Rivals

The Transfer Window Deadline Nears

Mason Greenwood, the 21-year-old forward who was recently axed by Manchester United, may have received a last-minute lifeline from a top European club. With the transfer window set to close today at 11pm, the Red Devils are racing against time to offload the talented player.

Lazio's Interest in Greenwood

Respected Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Lazio is interested in signing Greenwood. Romano mentioned on Twitter that the club has been offered the possibility of acquiring the striker from Man United. However, as of now, no decision has been made.

Turkish Giants Also Eyeing Greenwood

Besiktas, the Turkish giants, were reportedly considering a loan deal for Greenwood. Additionally, another Turkish club has expressed interest. Turkey may be a more practical destination for Greenwood, as the Süper Lig transfer window deadline is not until September 15.

Greenwood's Departure from United

In August, Greenwood and Manchester United "mutually agreed" that it would be best for him to leave the club. This decision came after backlash surrounding his potential return to the squad following his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault. Although Greenwood was charged last year, all charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service. Since January 2022, he has not played a single match for United.

Potential Financial Implications for United

If Manchester United is unable to secure a transfer deal for Greenwood, they may be forced to pay his £75,000 a week contract. With two years remaining on his contract and the option for an additional 12 months, the club could face a pay-off of nearly £8 million.
