Mason Greenwood protest planned by Manchester United fans before first Premier League home game of season

Protest against Greenwood Return

Manchester United fans are gearing up to stage a protest against the potential return of Mason Greenwood before the team's first home game. The fans plan to make their feelings known during the Premier League curtain-raiser against Wolverhampton on Monday.

High Standards at United

One of the group's organizers spoke to The Athletic and emphasized the need for the club to make the right decision regarding Greenwood. The organizer stated, "It's time to say, 'We have high standards at United about how we expect players to conduct themselves and, if you do not meet those standards, you need to be moved out'. This is a tipping point for the club."

Test of Loyalties

The protesters believe that the case surrounding Greenwood's arrest is a test to see whether the team will prioritize "commercialism and trophies and money" or stand with their fans. They have created a large banner bearing the messages "Female fans demand no Greenwood return" and "End violence against women" to highlight their concerns.

Rumored Return

Despite charges of attempted rape, coercive behavior, and assault being dropped earlier this year, the 21-year-old striker is rumored to be making a return to the team. He has not played for United since his arrest in January 2021. The club has been conducting its own internal investigation before making a final decision.

Fans' Discontent

The exclusion of Greenwood from the team's provisional squad list has dealt a major blow to his hopes of a comeback. However, protesting fans argue that his return would be an unacceptable slap in the face. The potential comeback has sparked outrage among female fans who feel marginalized and believe that such a move would be an attack on all of them.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February, and discussions regarding his potential return to Old Trafford are expected to conclude soon.
