Mason Mount trains after suffering ankle injury with Chelsea midfielder set for late fitness tests ahead of Palace clash

MASON MOUNT was spotted back in training after suffering an ankle injury, with the Chelsea midfielder set for a late fitness test ahead of this weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace.

The Blues midfielder, 20, who was named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, picked up the knock in Tuesday’s 4-4 thriller against Ajax.

The Three Lions ace winced as he limped off the pitch in what appeared to be a nasty-looking injury.

Mount will now go through a session with the physio before having a fitness test on Friday after undergoing scans on Wednesday.

Boss Frank Lampard played down the severity of the injury after the Ajax game, saying: Theyve strapped his ankle and hopefully its relatively minor.

And the Blues chief will be hopeful of having the young midfielder available after he’s taken on a starring role this term.

Mount has made 17 appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring four goals while also playing four times for England.

Chelsea are already set to be without Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for the game against Palace through injury, while Jorginho is suspended.

That leaves just Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante as central midfield options, with Lampard keen to get Mount ready for Saturday.

Meanwhile, Reece James, 19, looks set to keep his place in the Chelsea starting XI after another excellent showing against Ajax.

James, on loan at Wigan last season, already looks like the No1 choice at right-back ahead of seasoned-veteran Cesar Azpilicueta.
