Mason Mount ‘will have last-minute scan on thigh problem with Chelsea sweating on his fitness for Aston Villa clash’

CHELSEA star Mason Mount is set to undergo a late fitness test due to a thigh problem ahead of their clash with Aston Villa.

He is set to have a scan to examine the injury and he was not involved in training on Friday to help him recover.

Mason Mount has a thigh problem to add to Chelsea’s injury woes

The Athletic report that the club are hopeful that he will be fit for the game on Sunday.

Mount was substituted at half time in the Blues’ Champions League win over AC Milan in midweek after winning a penalty just 20 minutes in.

The 23-year-old has started every match under Graham Potter since he took over last month and he has been immune from the manager’s rotation.

He is the only outfield player to do so in the five games the ex-Brighton boss has been in charge of.

This season Mount has started 12 matches for the club registering five assists but he is still waiting for his first goal.

Chelsea will be without a number of key players for their trip to Villa Park tomorrow with Wesley Fofana, N’Golo Kante and Reece James all in the treatment room.

Conor Gallagher or perhaps Christian Pulisic or Hakim Ziyech could come in to the starting XI if Mount is out – depending on the position Potter hoped to use him in.

Additionally, Cesar Azpilicueta could come in to replace James.

Trevor Chalobah may continue at right centre-back as Potter confirmed that Fofana will be unavailable for a few weeks due to a knee problem and that Kante is ruled out until after the World Cup.

Meanwhile, James could be injured for some time with a knee issue that is reportedly worse than originally feared.

The England international is now a doubt for the World Cup.

James will discover his Qatar fate this weekend amid fears an operation could be required.
