Mauricio Pochettino admits he dreams of returning to Tottenham as he has unfinished work

MAURICIO POCHETTINO “dreams” of returning to Tottenham to complete the job he started and win the Premier League.

The Argentinian, sacked and replaced as boss by Jose Mourinho last November, is favourite to take over at Newcastle if their £300milion Saudi takeover goes ahead.

But with Spurs’ last silverware being the 2008 Carling Cup, the 48-year-old insists he could give his old club a team to match their peerless new stadium.

Pochettino told BT Sport: “Before I die I want to manage Tottenham and try to win one title!

“It will be an opportunity to pay back the fans for all the love they showed us.

“From the day that I left the club, my dream is to one day be back and finish the work we didn’t finish…

“Deep inside I would like one day to be back, this club is special.”

Pochettino’s five-year reign at Spurs peaked with reaching the 2019 Champions League Cup final, having also finished fourth in the Premier league.

But a tame 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in that showpiece signalled a surprise slump.

And just five months later, with Tottenham 14th in the Prem, Tottenham axed him.

Chairman Daniel Levy said at the time: “We were extremely reluctant to make this change. It is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.”

Levy saluted the “many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff”.

Pochettino’s axing was still a shock, though – given that, ironcially, he had blong been linked with succeddeing Mourinho weh the Portuguese was struggling at Manchester United.
