Mauricio Pochettino’s former Southampton academy star Omar Rowe set for Championship return

MAURICIO POCHETTINO’S former Southampton academy product Omar Rowe is set to make a return to English football in the Championship.

The winger made his Saints first team debut as an 18-year-old under Pochettino during a League Cup second round thrashing of Barnsley in 2013.

He was brought through the academy alongside the likes of Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers.

Rowe was tipped for big things under the Argentine coach, and would make another appearance in the cup third round, as well as scoring 10 goals in 29 U23 games.

But he gradually dropped down the divisions in the UK before a three-year spell in Cyprus.

Now back in England with Hayes and Yeading United, the 25-year-old has caught the eye once more with 14 assists and 13 goals in 21 games.

SunSport understands championship outfit Barnsley – the club he made his senior debut against – are interested in giving Rowe another chance in England’s second highest division.

And with a transfer value of just £15k, he could prove to be a shrewd bit of business.

Portsmouth, Bolton, Peterborough, Tranmere and Bristol City are also keeping tabs on the player.

Poch spent almost two seasons with the Saints before moving to Tottenham, where he led them to the Champions League final last season.

The 48-year-old is on the look-out for another job after leaving Spurs earlier this campaign.

Rowe’s younger brother Aaron is at Huddersfield, signing his first professional contract with the club in March 2019 on a three-year deal.

He spent time on loan at Boston United and Bromley this season before returning to the Terriers last month.
