Mikel Arteta already planning new position for Kai Havertz after just two Arsenal appearances for £65m star

ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Kai Havertz may play a number of positions for the club.

The German international forward, 24, sealed a £65million move from Chelsea to Arsenal earlier this month.

Kai Havertz scored his first Arsenal goal in the 5-0 win over MLS All-Stars

We then reported how Arteta was planning to use him on the left of midfield to fill the void left by Granit Xhaka.

That is the position that the star has operated after coming off the bench in his first two outings for the Gunners.

It is a role that Havertz used to play in his academy days at Bayer Leverkusen but he has since gone on to be deployed as either a central striker or as a No.10.

The new man got off the mark for Arsenal in the 5-0 victory over MLS All-Stars this morning from central midfield after coming on as substitute.

And with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah currently battling it out to be No.9, Arteta has hinted that Havertz’s role may change over the course of the campaign.

He said: “He gives us something very different with his quality and size as well, when you have to beat the press for example and use him as a target man.

“So, we will see – for now, he’s playing in the attacking midfield position, but I’m sure throughout the season and throughout games as well, we’re going to have the options to play him in different positions.”

Midfielder Declan Rice, who cost Arsenal a British transfer record of £105m from West Ham, made his debut in Washing DC earlier.

But it was fellow new boy Jurrien Timber, the £40m full-back from Ajax, that had fans talking.

Dutch international Timber only came off the bench to make his bow midway through the second half of the onslaught but in an unusually more advanced midfield role.

But during that brief time he enjoyed 29 touches of the ball, won three out of three ground duels and produced a 95 per cent pass accuracy.

And supporters were quickly taking to Twitter afterwards to sing his praises and tell Arteta that he should be their “main starter” each week.
