Mikel Arteta’s incredible Arsenal cull revealed with just SEVEN left of 28-man squad that boss inherited off Unai Emery

MIKEL ARTETA continued his Arsenal cull by letting 16 players leave the club in the winter transfer window.

That means there are just SEVEN players left at the club from Unai Emery’s 2018 Arsenal-assembled squad.

And there could be be just TWO lads left at the start of next season.

Emery’s squad shot from when he took over in the summer of 2018 shows a host of recognisable faces to Gunners fans.

But only Emile Smith Rowe and Granit Xhaka are almost certain to be part of Arteta’s merry band next season.

And that’s only because Xhaka recently agreed a new contract despite him splitting opinion massively on the terraces.

Five players have big question marks over their future from Emery’s 2018 crew – and there is a big chance they will ALL leave.

Alexandre Lacazette‘s contract is up at the end of the season and there isn’t even any talks ongoing.

The same applies to Mo Elneny and Kostas Mavropanos.

Bernd Leno has been ousted from the No1 keeper spot by Aaron Ramsdale and unless he gets it back, could well seek a summer transfer.

Rob Holding is another who has failed to convince in the starting XI, with Ben White and Gabriel ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hector Bellerin, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Lucas Torreira are out on loan and will leave the club this summer.

And Eddie Nketiah will also exit the Emirates after reaching the end of his tether at not getting a chance up front.

The rest of Emery’s band are gone – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being the big name to depart this month as he joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

The Gabon striker had been completely frozen out by Arteta after a number of disciplinary issues.

Emery was sacked on November 2019 after a disastrous spell that saw his side go seven games without a win for the first time since 1992.

Freddie Ljungberg was placed in temporary charge before Arteta left his role on Manchester City‘s coaching team to return to North London.

He has taken a fair bit of time to win over the fans, but slowly but surely this season has got their top-four ambitions on track.

But the Gunners announced only ONE transfer before the window slammed shut, 23-year-old American defender Auston Trusty leaving fans worried.
