KIERAN TRIPPIER will be the first England international to play for Newcastle since… Andros Townsend – at rival Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in 2016.

Yet whereas Townsend left just five weeks after the 2-1 win against Australia for Crystal Palace, Toon’s new signing from Atletico Madrid could herald the start of a new era of Magpies stars turning out for the Three Lions.

Andros Townsend was Newcastle’s last England international

You’d have to go way back to November 2010 for the last time a Newcastle player started an England game.

Local lad Andy Carroll was replaced in the second half by Jay Bothroyd as Fabio Capello’s side lost 2-1 to France in a friendly.

But just like Townsend, the striker was out of the St James’ Park in a flash, sealing a £35million move to Liverpool less than three months later.

Before that, Michael Owen won his final 18 caps as a Magpie after joining from Real Madrid in 2005, with his last international appearance coming as a sub in a 1-0 defeat to the French in March 2008.

In 2007, striker-turned-midfielder Alan Smith played twice under Steve McClaren while on Tyneside.

A year earlier, Scott Parker’s one cap while at Newcastle came in that THAT Euro 2008 qualifier defeat against Croatia forever remembered for goalkeeper Paul Robinson’s blunder.

Nicky Butt played his final four England games after signing from Manchester United in July 2004.

And you have to go all the way back to Jermaine Jenas’ 13 games between 2003-05 since someone picked up more than 10 caps as a Toon player.

Trippier may be 31 but remains a big part of Gareth Southgate’s plans and will back himself to comfortably surpass Jenas.

The lack of Newcastle call-ups in recent times is hardly a surprise given their barren years under former owner Mike Ashley.

But back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, more often than not there was some representation.

Kieron Dyer won 32 caps and David Batty 25, while 35 of Geordie Alan Shearer’s 63 Three Lions appearances – and 19 of his 30 goals – came at his hometown club.
