Newcastle plot Issa Diop swoop from West Ham with French defender wanted to shore up Toon backline

WEST HAM star Issa Diop has emerged as the latest name on Newcastle’s transfer radar.

Boss Eddie Howe wants two defenders with Premier League experience before the window shuts on Monday and enquired about the 25-year-old French centre-back.

Newcastle want to sign Issa Diop in the final few days of the transfer window

Injury-hit Toon have also asked for a handful of players this week, including Burnley’s James Tarkowski plus Brighton pair Adam Webster and Dan Burn.

Burnley are split over selling Tarkowski, especially to a relegation rival. Sean Dyche wants to keep the 29-year-old when his contract runs out in the summer but Turf Moor’s money men may trade.

Hammers would sell Diop for around £10million although that would leave David Moyes needing a replacement in a hurry.

Sheffield United’s John Egan, 29, is the name being whispered within the club.

Hammers are also considering a bid for Crystal Palace hitman Christian Benteke who could be available for as little as £10m after being pushed out of Patrick Vieira’s side.

Benteke, 31, did not want to leave London when Burnley enquired recently. But staying with his family in the capital and getting a good contract from West Ham would work for the Belgium striker.

Palace are willing to deal as they haggle over a price for Jean-Philippe Mateta, 24.

The on-loan Frenchman will go back to Mainz in the summer unless he plays enough for an £18m deal to kick in.

Mateta’s recent form has made Vieira keen to keep him but Palace want to get the price down.

Vieira is still clinging to hopes Arsenal contract rebel Eddie Nketiah, 22, will turn down a move abroad — although the Gunners are ignoring Palace offers so far.
