Newcastle transfer target James Ward-Prowse sends Christmas Day message to Southampton fans after 2021 struggles

SOUTHAMPTON skipper James Ward-Prowse has delivered a Christmas Day message to the club’s fans thanking them for their endless support in 2021.

The 27-year-old has urged the Saints faithful to stay safe and to enjoy the festive fun after what has been a tough calendar year for the British public.

James Ward-Prowse has thanked the club’s supporters ahead of the Boxing Day clash against West Ham

Speaking ahead of Southampton’s Boxing Day clash away at West Ham, the reported Newcastle target has conceded that results have been poor.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side finished last season in 15th place – the same position the south coast outfit sit this term.

Southampton have won just three out of their 17 Premier League games – scoring just 16 times while losing on six occasions.

Though 2021 has been a fine year for Ward-Prowse who became the club’s top earner in August after penning a new long-term deal.

Along with being named as Southampton’s Player of the Season and Fans’ Footballer of the Year, the 27-year-old also scored twice in five England caps.

The academy graduate told the Daily Echo: “I think from our perspective it’s a big thank you for all of your support.

“It’s been a tough year and not only from a footballing perspective, in terms of some of the results, but there’s constant support you’ve given us through really difficult times.

“We’ve all had a really big assessment of what’s important to us as people over the last couple of years.

“We know that we’re a big factor in people’s lives in terms of giving them something back and making their weeks complete with a good result on Saturday.

“That’s our main thing, to make you happy.

“A big thanks to everyone, ensure you stay safe and enjoy Christmas and the New Year.”

Ward-Prowse will be looking to score his fourth top-flight goal of the campaign when the Saints travel to the London Stadium on Boxing Day.

Southampton are aiming for their first win since beating Aston Villa 1-0 at St Mary’s on November 5.
