Melissa Phillips refuses to be daunted by the gulf in league form between Brighton and Manchester United as her side eye a Women’s FA Cup upset.

Phillips, 35, was appointed last week as Seagulls’ fourth manager this season.

Brighton hope to reach the Women’s FA Cup final for the first time in their history when they face Man United later

The Seagulls semi-final clash with the Red Devils could see Maya Le Tissier play against her old side

Melissa Phillips sees the game as a chance for Albion to challenge themselves against the WSL leaders

And she hopes today’s semi-final can kickstart their league survival fight.

She said: “Of course it’s going to be difficult, but we look at the opportunity more than any challenges we face.

“We want to have a really positive mindset about everything we do from here out. I don’t think we see it as pressure at all.

“We see it as an opportunity to really challenge ourselves against one of the best teams in the league.

“Our priorities are going to be on the league but it’s not just about staying up.

“It’s about making sure we give a good account of ourselves in the remaining league fixtures.”

Phillips’ move to Brighton follows the Californian’s brief stint as Angel City FC assistant manager in the US top-flight.

Before that, she spent three years managing London City Lionesses and left in January with the team top of the Women’s Championship.

Leaders United beat Brighton 4-0 in the WSL two weeks ago, leaving Seagulls a point adrift at the bottom.

Phillips added: “There’s a reason they’re top of the table.

“United have some incredible threats up top with their pace and how dynamic they are.

“They’ve been exceptionally well coached and have a really good identity about themselves.

“We’ll take a lot of learnings from the previous game and make minor adjustments to be even more competitive.”

Brighton’s duel with Marc Skinner’s side comes ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Everton.

Phillips says Brighton will be adjusting their approach following their 4-0 loss to Man United in the league this month

A Seagulls win in that game could lift them off the foot of the table.

Phillips added: “We’ve had some good conversations about how we want to attack the table.

“We have to build on what’s worked and what our identity is from here.”
