Here SunSport runs through a best XI of Prem stars who’s countries made it to Qatar, but they did not.

David de Gea

Winning Manchester United Players’ Player of the Year last season, and continuing his impressive form into this campaign, wasn’t enough for De Gea to make Spain’s squad.

The 32-year-old has been capped 45 times by the 2010 World Cup champs but wasn’t even in the provisional 55-man shortlist.

Instead Athletic Bilbao Unai Simon is set to be No1, with Brentford’s David Raya and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez acting as backups.

Joe Gomez

The Liverpool defender hasn’t played for England in over two years, but defensive injuries led to speculation that Gomez could be in for a recall.

Gomez has managed to stay free of injury this season, but he still didn’t do enough to make Southgate’s squad.

Sven Botman

The Newcastle defender has been superb this season, helping Eddie Howe’s side to third in the Premier League going into the break.

But his form still wasn’t enough for a maiden Netherlands call up, with Louis van Gaal boasting Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij in Botman’s position.

Gabriel Magalhaes

Like Botman, the Arsenal man has enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign, but has not been rewarded for his form.

His centre-back partner William Saliba will be there with France, but the 23-year-old is still waiting on a first Brazil call up.

Lucas Digne

Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne has been snubbed by France after being included in the Euro 2020 squad.

Instead the reigning World Cup champs have taken Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid), Theo Hernandez (AC Milan) and Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich) in his position.

Douglas Luiz

Digne’s Villa team-mate Douglas also misses out, failing to make the Brazil squad.

Manchester United midfielder Fred and Liverpool ace Fabinho were picked ahead of him, despite the pair struggling for form this season.

Thiago Alcantara

His surprise comes as a slight shock, given the influence has has on the pitch when playing for the Reds.

The 31-year-old featured for Spain at Euro 2020 last year, although he hasn’t featured for his country since then.

James Ward-Prowse

Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse was pipped to a spot in England’s World Cup squad by Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher.

The midfielder was in England’s last camp before the tournament back in September, but was not included for the plane to Qatar.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho’s England exile continues after a stuttering start to the season with Manchester United.

The winger has not played for the Three Lions in over a year, and continues to be left out by Southgate.

Roberto Firmino

The Liverpool ace has enjoyed a revival this season, netting seven goals in 13 Prem games.

That wasn’t enough for a place in Tite’s Brazil squad, despite Firmino scoring more Prem goals than Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison combined this campaign.

Ivan Toney

Brentford talisman Ivan Toney was unlucky to miss out on a spot in England’s World Cup squad.

Callum Wilson got the nod ahead of him, despite the Bees striker scoring 10 goals in 14 Prem outings this term.
