Referee’s Orders Ignored by Van Dijk, Resulting in Potential Extended Ban

Van Dijk's Red Card Incident

Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk's refusal to leave the pitch despite orders from referee Jon Brooks may result in a longer suspension. During the first episode of "Match Officials Mic'd Up," Howard Webb, the head of referees, supported Brook's decision to give Van Dijk a red card for his tackle on Alexander Isak. The audio recording of the game revealed Brooks instructing Van Dijk to leave the field immediately.

Referee Stands Firm on Decision

Brooks remained resolute in his decision, stating, "It's clearly a foul. Don't do anything silly after. You will be sent off unless it's offside." Despite clear instructions to go, Van Dijk refused to accept the decision until he was eventually persuaded to leave the pitch. The player's defiance and subsequent comments have landed him with an FA charge.

Webb Backs Referees in Other Controversial Calls

Howard Webb also supported referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Jarred Gillett in overturning the penalty decision involving Kai Havertz in the match against Manchester United. The audio recording of the game showed Taylor explaining his belief of a trip before Gillett clarified that there was no contact. Webb commended the proper use of VAR in this instance.

Webb Acknowledges Errors in Recent Matches

While defending several referee decisions, Webb admitted two significant errors made by officials this season. The first was Fulham's frustration at Nathan Ake's goal being allowed to stand, despite going through an offside player. Webb acknowledged that this goal should have been disallowed. The second mistake was when Wolves should have been awarded a penalty during their match against Manchester United. Webb admitted that the VAR overthought the situation and a penalty should have been given.
