ROBERTO MARTINEZ is interested in replacing the axed Dean Smith.
But Aston Villa think they can get Steven Gerrard out of Rangers.
Villa sacked Smith on Sunday after a run of five straight defeats.
And Belgium boss Martinez is keen on the role as he plots a return to the Premier League.
Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership last title season and has a contract until 2024.
He is adored by Gers fans and has many admirers — including the Villa owners.
The 41-year-old could see Villa as a perfect stepping stone to the Liverpool job, with Jurgen Klopp also out of contract in 2024.
Martinez, 48, will be perfectly placed for talks when he arrives in the UK next week to face Wales.

However, he is determined to secure Belgium’s place at next year’s World Cup before deciding his future.
Martinez turned down the chance to manage Villa in June 2011.
But he would jump at the chance to talk to them now after telling those close to him he has ambitions to return to club management.
Martinez fears he has taken the world’s No 1-ranked team as far as he can and was recently linked with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle and Barcelona.
