Sergio Romero is Man Utd’s forgotten man at No1 but deserves shot at Europa League glory

ALL the talk recently has been of Manchester United’s other goalkeepers.

David de Gea has had some howlers since lockdown – most notably in the FA Cup semi final horror show against Chelsea at Wembley.

Sergio Romero has been with Manchester United since 2015

And Dean Henderson wants answers over his future – whether it is going to be back at Old Trafford, at Sheffield United or maybe Chelsea.

Meanwhile Sergio Romero – widely considered to be the best understudy in the Premier League – has had to sit quietly and listen to it all.

The Argentine is considered to be United’s cup keeper – and none of his 16 appearances this season have come in the Premier League.

So It was something of a surprise when Solskjaer opted for De Gea for the last four date with the Blues – and it was a decision that back-fired spectacularly.

Now Romero, 33, will be praying his boss shows more faith in him for the Europa League finals in Germany later this month.

He was trusted by Jose Mourinho when United went all the way to win this competition three years ago – even playing in the final against Ajax.

With the pressure off United in some respects – as their Champions League place in secured – surely he deserves the chance to do it again.

Here he was given his chance as Solskjaer rang the changes.

Playing behind a much changed defence, he looked safe for much of the night – making a couple of decent saves.

Early in the second half he could do nothing as he was beaten by a stunning strike by Philipp Wiesinger – a goal out of keeping with much of what had gone before.

There was a wobble when Dominic Frierser’s shot from a narrow angle was not held but luckily he got away with it.

Maybe Romero was a bit rusty – after all this was only his second game since the last time these two teams met way back in the middle of March.

Now though he needs to be given United’s remaining games of the season – which they all hope will be three – to build his confidence back up.

Romero’s contract only has 12 months left to run.

If Solskjaer doesn’t stand by him this time, it may be time for the former Sampdoria man to look elsewhere.
