Sheff Utd 1 Fulham 1: Mitrovic misses penalty, concedes one after controversial VAR call and misses amazing chance

BILLY SHARP’S late penalty saved Sheffield United after Fulham thought they had bagged their first win of the season with an Ademola Lookman stunner.

Both sides were pointless heading into the match and it looked like the Cottagers had nicked it after Lookman’s solo strike in the 77th minute.

But Blades skipper Sharp, who had only come on as a sub four minutes earlier, smashed home from 12-yards after Aleksandar Mitrovic’s high foot.

It was a terrible afternoon all round for the Serbian, who smashed his own spot-kick off the bar with the game at 0-0 before missing a great chance at the death to win it.

But while neither Chris Wilder or Scott Parker will be happy with the point, they are both on the board to leave Burnley rooted to the bottom of the table.

Sheffield United had not scored in their first two home games but they should have been out of sight at half-time – with Oli McBurnie the main culprit.

The Scot glanced his first header just wide before scuffing a golden chance onto his shoulder that allowed Alphonse Areola to react.

But if you cannot score yourself, at least you can rely on Fulham’s generous defence to help.

The Serbian fired his effort off the crossbar

McBurnie was waiting to surely tap home Sander Berge’s cross but debutant Tosin Adarabioyo bundled into his own net – only for the Norwegian to be flagged for offside.

The Cottagers burst out of the traps after the break and had a penalty when Jack Robinson inexplicably stuck his arm in the air to compete with Ruben Loftus-Cheek from a corner.

As Ramsdale went right, the Serbian – normally a banker from the spot – fired down the middle but got too much loft and agonisingly watched on as it glanced off the bar.

Parker’s side all of a sudden looked a danger on the counter, yet were repeatedly let down by a weak final ball.

Referee Andre Marriner considered the replay before awarding the late spot-kick

But they got their reward in the 77th minute via a brilliant Lookman goal – even if Chris Wilder will be apoplectic at the defending.

Picking it up from 40 yards out, the ex-Everton forward skinned Sander Berge inside out and powered through a weak Chris Basham challenge before rifling into the roof of the net.

But the hosts equalised with six minutes to go from the spot.

Fulham were preparing for their own corner before VAR intervened and spotted a high boot from Mitrovic, leaving Sharp to fire home and rescue a point for the South Yorkshiremen.
