Newcastle loanee Jeff Hendrick excluded from registered squad list but still featured in FA Cup game

Sheffield Wednesday's manager, Danny Rohl, expressed surprise after discovering that loanee Jeff Hendrick, who was left off the club's 25-man EFL registered squad, still had the opportunity to play in an FA Cup match. Despite Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Coventry in the cup game last week, Hendrick managed to get some minutes on the pitch.

Hendrick joined Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of the season after falling out of favor at St James' Park. In January, he reportedly requested to terminate his loan spell at Hillsborough, but the request was denied.

Manager Danny Rohl shed light on Hendrick's unexpected appearance in the cup game, explaining that he was not aware that players excluded from the EFL squad registration list could still participate in cup matches. Speaking to The Star, Rohl said, "He played some minutes in the cup, which was good. There is a learning also from my side that you have an FA Cup list and a league list."

Rohl further explained the reason behind Hendrick's initial exclusion from the squad, stating, "We have seven loans, and so we have to make decisions, this is part of the reason why." According to the current rules, a club can only register up to five loanee players, and Hendrick did not make the cut.

However, Rohl emphasized that it is not the end for Hendrick, saying, "He is still involved, and I think maybe when I look to the next 15 games, it could be that he is helpful. He has trained, he is professional. All of my players have taken the situation how it is. This is not normal, when I compare this to my stations before, you have players who are disappointed and they show this. It's great to see."

Sheffield Wednesday is set to face Championship leaders Leicester in their upcoming match as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone.
