Tottenham keen to re-sign Dennis Cirkin from Sunderland – just a year after letting academy prospect leave in transfer

TOTTENHAM have been taking a big interest  in Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin — who they only let go of last year.

Cirkin, 20, has caught the eye in the Championship at the Black Cats since the move and Spurs are looking into a possible return trip to the capital  for their former academy prospect.

The North London club surprisingly let him go and could pull off another shock by bidding to bring him back.

However, that may be part of an elaborate move to sign Dublin-born Cirkin and then sell him soon after to a rival.

Cirkin has recently returned to fitness after injury and Spurs are due to watch him again in the build-up to the January transfer window.

The 6ft defender came through Tottenham’s academy system after moving to London from Ireland aged three.

He appeared on Spurs’ first-team’s bench five times across the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

In August 2021, the Lilywhites allowed the promising ace to join Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

He made 41 appearances in his debut season at the Stadium of Light, primarily as a left-back.

These outings included the full 90 minutes of his side’s League One play-off final triumph over Wycombe.

Cirkin started Sunderland’s first eight Championship games of this season on the left of a back three.

He returned to the bench for this weekend’s clash with Swansea after returning to fitness.

The England Under-20 international will hope to be in action as Sunderland host Wigan next time out.
